I recently visited Etosha Park in Namibia this summer, and I want to share some highlights with you. We spent three days exploring the park, driving around, and looking for wildlife. As you can see from the pictures, we were lucky to spot quite a few animals.
One of the most exciting moments was seeing lions for the first time in the wild. Although I missed getting a good photo of a big male lion walking, he eventually lay down and watched us closely for about half an hour. The next day, we saw more lions, including one that was active early in the morning.
Etosha Park offers some beautiful scenery, like the waterhole known as 2 Palms. The animals, such as wildebeests, hyenas, and giraffes, roam freely and aren’t afraid of cars. We even saw a hyena with a bone and another one up close. Other sightings included a bird we came across frequently, warthogs on the road, a few jackals, and plenty of giraffes.
I also want to mention my outfit for the trip. With the weather getting hotter throughout the day, wearing shorts was a great choice. I bought them last-minute at H&M along with the shirt I wore. I wore my hat every day, and by the end of the holiday, it was completely worn out.
If you’re curious about how we arranged our trip, here’s a quick rundown. We booked everything ourselves, including our flight tickets with Namibia Air from Frankfurt to Windhoek and our stay at Emanya Lodge, which is about a 20-minute drive from Etosha Park. The lodge was lovely, and the staff was friendly. Although there are lodges closer to the park, like Mushara, which could save some driving time.
My husband would have preferred to spend a night or two inside the park since the accommodations there have nicer waterholes where wildlife gathers at night and in the morning. However, these options tend to be more expensive and not as nice. We did all our traveling in a 4-wheel drive that we rented online.
Besides Etosha Park, we explored other parts of Namibia and saw even more animals, but I’ll save that for another article. Do you have plans to go on a safari in the future?
