Redefine Plus Size Fashion: Defy the Norms and Look Fabulous!

Today, I’m excited to introduce Delilah, who will be sharing insights on plus-size fashion more regularly for 40+Style. To get to know her a bit more, you might want to check out her style interview.

I often get approached by other plus-size women who say, “You look great, but I could never pull that off.” I usually thank them and respond, “Oh, but you can!”

Traditionally, the fashion industry has given us strict rules on how to look perfect. For plus-size women, the advice has often been to avoid things like large prints, bright colors, horizontal stripes, body-conscious clothing, white items, sleeveless tops, and so on. The basic message was to hide under oversized, shapeless clothes and stick to a mainly black wardrobe.

As someone who loves to express herself through fashion, the only rules I stick to are wearing clothes that fit well and dressing for the body I have now. I know my body type (an inverted triangle) and which styles look best on me. I love A-line skirts and dresses, full-leg trousers, and jeans. However, I also wear items like skinny jeans, pencil skirts, and shift dresses, even if they’re not typically recommended for my shape.

If you want to find out your body type, you can determine it here. It’s time we challenge these old “plus-size fashion rules” because breaking them opens up endless fashion possibilities. After all, we all deserve to feel fabulous, confident, and stylish, no matter our size.

Here’s how I break those so-called rules:

– Horizontal stripes and bright colors are often said to be a plus-size woman’s worst enemy, but I embrace them.
– People say wearing white draws attention to problem areas, but I disagree. If you need more ideas on how to wear white pants, check this out.
– Bold prints are often labeled as a no-no, yet I love them.
– Denim is sometimes thought to highlight problem areas, but I don’t let that stop me from wearing jeans.

Do you break any rules for your body type? Remember, it’s all about what makes you feel good.

Previously, I ran a plus-size fashion blog called Pumps & Studz, where I shared my love for black and white, hats, and all things sparkly.
